Find a map to get lost...the beauty of surrendering to uncertainty.
We humans ache for a sense of certainty, clarity, concreteness. We can’t help ourselves from planning out the future and getting cozy with the idea of exactly how it exists in our mind. Yet, one of the only truths that continues to remain certain is that the future is uncertain.
I know, you’ve heard that before. We all have. But somehow it’s something that we need to be reminded of over and over again.
Can you blame us? From a young age, our brain is primed to detect pain verses pleasure— to constantly scan our environment for threat and ensure safety, a sense of certainty. What a beautiful skill woven into our nature! It is absolutely vital for survival. We need it and appreciate all it does for us.
When we can understand where this primal need comes from, we can start to hold compassion towards our deep craving for safety and certainty. We can also start to make room for the idea that this primal need doesn’t always need to be in the driver’s seat.
A recent interaction reminded me of the concept of “surrender.” The concept of it always sounds so freeing and dream-like, yet it’s hard to actually do. The conversation urged me to find a map to get lost. To me, this means existing in time and truly exploring it. It means being on the journey without putting the destination before the path or the result before the process.
What would your life feel like if you let yourself “find a map to get lost?”
What would you do if it was “okay” to not know what the future holds?
How would things in your life change if you started to let uncertainty be present?
Maybe the future is even better than we imagine it. When we make room for uncertainty, to discover what we don’t yet know, the whole world opens up to create something. Maybe that something is what we imagined in our mind all along, or maybe it’s something different and even more exciting. What if that something adds the chapter to your story that you wouldn’t trade for anything…
Who knows? No one. So find a map to get lost and enjoy your travels along the way <3
